Written for parents, teachers, and care-givers of kids up to age 5, it focuses on disciplining (the root word meaning TEACHING, not PUNISHING) children positively. I love learning about positive discipline; I wish I was an expert at implementing it! This book's teaching is so Love and Logic. I was about to re-read L&L, but this one stood out to me in the library. It focuses on disciplining with respect, being kind but firm, getting into your child's world (figuring out why she is misbehaving, which is actually a misguided message to you), and ways to discipline instead of punish. I loved that they brought up the often-quoted verse "Spare the rod and spoil the child". In Psalm 23 it also says, "Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me." - Does spanking comfort a child? No, the 'rod' means to discipline, to teach, to have rules and boundaries.

Didn't take away as much as I hope from this book. Didn't find it to be applicable in real life unfortunately.

While I do appreciate many of the tips and attitudes present in this book and would recommend it for a parent who needed an alternative to yelling, spanking, etc. or one who knew little about child development, it was basic to the extent that it quickly became clear I was not the target audience. The author explains that neurotransmitters are "special substances in the brain", for instance, and more than once lists out the senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing) in case we forgot them. I was 1/5 of the way through the book when I realized I hadn't yet learned anything or come across any new perspectives or information and decided to set it down.

To reiterate, most of the information is standard good practice and I'm in the minority in cases where I disagree, so I can't exactly call it a bad book, but I would not recommend it to any parent that's already reasonably educated on discipline and child development.

Great book, some of the advice is kind of new to me and different from other books I've read but feel more realistic and applicable to my life. A different version of this book was recommended to me by a friend and I can't thank her enough. I will also be reading the generic non-age-specific one soon. That's how much I liked it.

I had a hard time with this. It seems to me as if the author has never had kids.

I thought this was a good, albeit milquetoast-y, book. It was nice to read a resource specifically geared towards preschoolers, when the majority of parenting books are designed for parents of babies or kids/teenagers. And I found some of the suggestions pretty helpful. Overall, definitely helpful, but perhaps not overly memorable.

I loved this book. I bought both this book and the original Positive Discipline book, and they've changed my daily experience and level of parenting frustration in under two weeks.

By teaching a system that you can apply to any situation, where you treat your children kindly but firmly, Jane Nelson armed me with confidence that left me always knowing what to do rather than wanting to run back and reference a parenting book for specific situations.

I'd recommend this to absolutely any parent or teacher of young children.

I love it when I find a parenting book that aligns with our family values. So many great suggestions for raising respectful and responsible kids without punishing them.
