Thanks netgalley for a free read in exchange for a review. This is my first book in this series, and strangely enough the last book in the series. World building was great but it lost a bit of its aplomb when a lot of the story was lost to me. The author didn't back track a whole lot but I got enough of the story to like it. The characters were great, great fleshing out, and the story took an interesting twist to the vampire storyline. Overall entertainment was four stars.

I am sad to learn this is the last Edie Spence novel. It is my favorite UF series by far.

I enjoyed this installment a bit more than the last one, but the ending didn't feel like an ending to me. There were too many things left hanging - not just with the series as a whole, but with this particular part of the story. I feel the book should have ended later, after Edie and crew reached their destination (I will refrain from saying more so as not to be too spoilerish). The big scene at the end didn't feel like a big finale to me, it just seemed like an exciting event on the way to something better. I know that this is the last book due to the publisher dropping the series (totally bogus of them) and that makes the way this ended even more unsatisfactory for me. Just bummed. I really enjoyed Edie and the world Alexander created and I hope she gets to come back to this in the future.

I liked Bloodshifted. It was nice to see Edie meeting her challenges head on and fighting back. She was trying her damnedest to fight her new day timer nature. Her conversations with her Baby were a bit weird and her attachment to it seemed a little forced and quick. She's hardly a month pregnant acting like she's much farther along. Kind of bugged the hell out of me. The end of this book felt very rushed like she was reaching her deadline and just slapped it together. It's a shame that this is the last book in this series. It's obvious that she planned for more books to follow but the publishers cut her short. Hopefully someone picks this series up and lets her continue, or even if she puts it out for free. I really hope to read more about Edie but we'll see.

I have been on the journey with Edie since the publication of the first book. I've loved every moment of it. This series has been a must read for me, as soon as I could possibly get my hands on each installment. I'm saddened to see the series come to a close, but I'm hopeful that some day Ms. Alexander will have to opportunity to publish more stories in the Edie Spence world.
In the mean time I'm looking forward to picking up her other books as they are released.

Well, it turns out that I read all five of the books in this trilogy a couple of years ago in the summer of 2014. I'm not sure why I didn't mark them as "read" in Goodreads, but I suspect it might have something to do with the fact that I read them within three months of my Dad's death, and after he died I didn't read anything for about three months. So that's a valid excuse for slipping on the "mark read and review" front. :'(

Anyway. . . I really enjoyed this series. I didn't love it enough to want to buy it and reread it, but I'm glad I rediscovered it and reread it so that I can review it.

This book takes up immediately where the last one left off: Edie is in the car being taken to her new "home." . . . I'm really sort of stumped as to what to say about this story. I liked it, it was good and fun and had some interesting new characters and situations, but all I can think to talk about is how the book (and the series) ended. So I guess I'll just do that. . . .

It's my understanding that the publisher cancelled this series (whyyyyyy?), but I can't tell if [a:Cassie Alexander|4517253|Cassie Alexander|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1315339948p2/4517253.jpg] knew going into this book that it would be her last Edie Spence story, or if it was cancelled after she finished it. This is a good thing, though; a very good thing. The last few books have ended in rather "cliffhanger-y" ways. I sort of feared going into this one that it would end in the same way.

Happily, it did not end in a "cliffhanger-y" way. :-) It wasn't as finalized-an-ending as I could have hoped for, but it did complete the story arc satisfactorily. What happened was this:

Edie
Spoileris rescued thanks to her own efforts and those of Anna and Asher, et.al. Anna dies in the rescue, though, and at Edie's hands: Edie will be forever after known as "Beastkiller." (She was compelled by Raven; it was the last order he gave her, and sadly Gemellus killed him after Edie broke the compulsion by fulfilling it.)

So, Anna
Spoileris dead and in three days will hopefully rise again as a "true" vampire - meaning the undead kind - but in the meantime, Edie and Asher and the daytimers (and the vampires, now "asleep" for the day) have to drive back to Port Cavell.

The final lines of the book are as follows:
Spoiler
. . . but I was still alive and so were the people I loved--and hopefully Anna was going to come back to life.
I wasn't going to let anyone or anything change that.
No matter what. [fin]

So was this a good ending to the series? Yes.
Did it leave any unfinished business? Also, yes.

The unfinished business involves these questions. The first one is the main one:
Spoiler
1. Edie, et.al., are expecting to be attacked on their drive back to Port Cavell. But attacked by who?
2. Will Edie be reunited with her mother, brother, and stepfather? Or will she let them believe she died in the sinking of the Maraschino?
3. Will Edie's unborn baby be a true shapeshifter like Asher used to be? Or will he be more like how Asher is now and thus able to grow to adulthood without having to worry about eventually going insane?
4. Will Gemellus keep his promises to Edie? Or will Anna have to kill him?

So, those are the questions that I'm left wondering about, but none of them are earth-shattering. I'm satisfied with how this book/series ended. I have the feeling (though again, I'm not 100% sure) that Cassie Alexander knew the series was cancelled and wrote the ending in this way in case she would ever be able to return to it. If she does ever find a new publisher for, or self-publish, more Edie Spence books, I'll look forward to reading them. But in the meantime, I'm happy to call my adventures with Edie "done." :-)
