Exactly the kind of memoir you’d expect from the big yin: that being, a pretty free flowing one that doesn’t have much of a through line but is pretty entertaining throughout.

Heartwarming, funny insight into Billy's life. Enjoyed reading his stories of his early career. You got a real feeling for what it would have been like in the 70s and 80s. Some emotional topics touched upon; his honesty, tenacity and reflection on these is to be admired.

Billy Connolly shares his life story – from humble beginnings in a Glasgow tenement flat in 1942, to his rise to the status of comedy legend – in his own windswept and interesting words.

I both read my physical copy and listened to the audiobook for this one. Written and read by Billy himself, it was heartbreaking to learn about his difficult childhood, but an absolute joy to follow the story of his growth as both a human being and entertainer.

Rating a memoir doesn’t feel right to me, so I won’t be assigning stars to Windswept & Interesting. Rather, I’ll leave you with a section (in-part) which particularly resonated with me as I continue on my own journey of self.

“You have to genuinely not give a 𝓯*𝓬𝓴 for what any other living human being thinks of you… Seek the company of people who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, will always try it on… And tell your story your own damn way.”

Windswept and Interesting is just that, a windswept and interesting remark on Billy Connolly’s life and way of thinking. Just like his shows, the story telling is all over the place, and yet always comes together. It’s riveting and enthralling. On more than one occasion I was laughing out loud and then just a few pages over feeling my heart break. We all have our burdens, Billy is no exception.

My Mum grew up loving Billy Connolly so I bought the Audiobook so we could listen to it together. We loved it.
