This book wasn't quite what I expected it to be. I found it interesting how Walden continued to do something she hated so much for so long, but with the events of her life, it makes sense. I hope that Walden has gotten some healing since publishing this book.

The book lacks momentum and is overly long, with repetitive skating routines and minimal character development. Despite interesting subject matter, the pacing is inconsistent, and Tillie's brief relationship receives little attention. The focus on trivial matters contrasts with the superficial treatment of important themes such as sexual assault and homophobia. The overall tone is detached and apathetic.

Oh, I love Tillie Walden's storytelling. Tillie wrote in her author's note that this book became something that got away from her; it's not exactly how things happened in her life, but what's accurate about them is the emotions they convey. This is the key in memoirs, and it shines particularly in graphic memoirs.

I felt and hoped and feared along with Tillie the entire way through. I know it took a lot of bravery to be so honest about her experiences as a young queer woman, dealing with others' expectations and homophobia. But I truly believe that sharing this part of her story is going to help so many other young people understand themselves, and know it's okay to quit sometimes.

I'm a big fan of Tillie Walden since I read On a Sunbeam.  I can't say enough good things about this book.  There's a lot of emotional vulnerability and I loved the author's note at the end explaining that not everything was accurate, like the outfits they wore, the time/date of the competitions, etc.  What was true, was the they they felt during their ice skating years and that was the important thing for the reader to experience.

This is the most beautiful and touching autobiography I have ever read.  Walden's storytelling was amazing.  The strong sense of voice mixed with the simple yet extremely communicative art style sealed this as a five star for me.  In every aspect I could feel how this book was a raw release of emotion.  I am so glad that this was my introduction to Walden's work and I cannot wait to explore the rest of it

i love graphic novels and i think all tillie walden’s work exemplifies why for me. in the author’s note she says this memoir was more about sharing a feeling than memories and that came across so well - i got completely pulled into to the mood and connected really strongly with a lot of it (read this at kind of a perfect time wrt to some feelings i’m working out irl :,))
