This author definitely has a certain vibe to their books. This one was a wild ride. I didn’t expect a world saving plot from something about crypto hunting. I wish there was more crypto hunting, like some supernatural-ish planning and hunting before capturing the beasty. Still a fun read tho

This was not the biggest waste of time, but it was close.

I try not to be too harsh in my reviews because I know how difficult it is to write a book. Monster sounded fun. I wanted something a bit outside my typical preferences and I wanted something fun. I ended up learning that this was far outside my tastes and ... and that's it.

The story follows the title character Monster, a cryptobiological rescue agent which is basically a magical version of animal control. Monster was once bitten by a basilisk and is now cursed to change colors every time he wakes. Each new color brings a new power or trait such as invisibility or the lack of his sense of smell. He meets Judy on a routine call regarding some Yetis devouring the local supermarket's supply of ice cream and things take a rather annoying turn for Monster. Before he knows it, and against his will, his and Judy's fate are locked together in a series of events that will decide the fate of the universe against a crazy cat lady.

I loved Monster, both the book and the character. He's basically just a lovable screw up who just wants to do his job and be left alone. The interactions between him and the other characters were always amusing, especially in regards to Chester, Monster's paper gnome/trans dimensional partner. One of the things I love about Martinez's work is how it can go from a standard, easy to follow story and suddenly dive into the metaphysical and existential without leaving you behind and scratching your head as to what the hell is going on. Such a fun read.

This is really a 3 1/2 stars book. It is entertaining enough, but not great. It is like eating a bag of chips; easy to do but you feel kind of bad afterwards.
