I was trying not to read this until I’d finished all of Maya Angelou’s autobiographies, but I still cannot find ‘A Song Flung Up to Heaven’ after searching for a year, so 🥲

This was JUST what I needed though. I have no scope for long stories at the moment and these short essays/letters were simply delightful. Angelou led the most exciting life, with such lovely leads (e.g. her family) and it is evident that although she never had a daughter, she took care of so many wonderful women (and they took care of her too, addressed in the acknowledgements) ❤️

I’m such a fan. 4 out of 5 stars for me, thank you ✨

It started off strong, I really love it. But then it just went downhill, I’m really disappointed. The lessons at the start were really impactful but the second half was basically just her worshipping the USA and praising christianity, none of which are things I can get behind.

This is wonderfully written and impactful, but just not really for me. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the essays, but most didn't hit right. Perhaps not being American (much less from the South or religious in that American way) made those essays less relatable for me. There is a nostalgia towards the past and particularly the past in the US (not the racism or sexism obviously) that I just couldn't connect with.

I mean some of it is wise, tho there's a shitload of assimilationism. Anyways, we're told to tailor this wisdom with our intelligence as we see fit.

A lot of it basically comes down to be polite so that you can make friends with people who will be willing to bail you out as needed.
