I mean some of it is wise, tho there's a shitload of assimilationism. Anyways, we're told to tailor this wisdom with our intelligence as we see fit.

A lot of it basically comes down to be polite so that you can make friends with people who will be willing to bail you out as needed.

this isn't my favorite by maya angelou, but because maya angelou wrote it, it's still excellent. some of her ideas are a little dated (vulgarity, piercings, etc), but that's to be expected. i enjoyed listening to the audio a lot because maya reads it herself and she was an excellent speaker, so it's a joy to listen to her. i think there are a lot of beautiful ideas in here and anyone who reads it will probably find something to take away from it.

Maya Angelou is great, but the best thing about this book is that the audiobook is read by her. I love when she's sharing stories that she learned from, and the coffee story and the rug story will definitely stick with me, but her preachy advice (e.g. all the stuff about patriotism) is not my thing and I often disagreed with her. It's a disjointed collection, and in particular her short essay on rape feels like her just taking the opportunity to throw a take out there without having done research or thought it through. Take what resonates and leave the rest!
