It's difficult to rate since it's  a collection, and there were parts that I didn't get, but also parts I enjoyed.

Maya Angelou has such a beautiful way to write. Her writing style is so comforting and I feel like a new person after reading this book, which immediately became one of my favorites.

More like a 3.5, but not because I did not like it!! This is a beautiful collection of essays and poems. All are short and pack a punch meshed with Angelou's outstanding reflections on life, democracy, love, and our relationships with one another. The only reason why I give it so low a rating is because I know she has other texts out there that I think are a better reflection of her work and who she is than we get from this collection (I think because it is so short and fast-paced). I think some of my favorite collections in this book were "To Tell the Truth," "Violence," "Fannie Lou Hamer," "The Eternal Silver Screen,' "Mrs. Corretta Scott King," and "Revelations." I think the delicacy with which she writes, paired with her descriptions of violence, grief, and terror, grants this book a particular affirmative quality that ultimately makes you feel less alone while giving you all the space you need to ask yourself the questions that perhaps you have cast aside in the course of your life. I think whether you are a daughter, mother, or anyone, really, you can benefit immensely from this book and all it has to offer. I think because it is shorter, too, it can really help pull folks out of a slump (whether that be a reading slump, a life slump, etc).

I mean some of it is wise, tho there's a shitload of assimilationism. Anyways, we're told to tailor this wisdom with our intelligence as we see fit.

A lot of it basically comes down to be polite so that you can make friends with people who will be willing to bail you out as needed.

this isn't my favorite by maya angelou, but because maya angelou wrote it, it's still excellent. some of her ideas are a little dated (vulgarity, piercings, etc), but that's to be expected. i enjoyed listening to the audio a lot because maya reads it herself and she was an excellent speaker, so it's a joy to listen to her. i think there are a lot of beautiful ideas in here and anyone who reads it will probably find something to take away from it.
