I wanted to like this book but just couldn't care about the characters.

The beginning of this book was brilliant.
By that, I mean the prologue.
I'd rather have read a whole book about Zee when her middle name was Trouble than the book that [a:Brunonia Barry|886869|Brunonia Barry|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1246466064p2/886869.jpg] wrote.
Honestly didn't see the twist coming until a chapter or so before it actually came though, so points there.
It has inspired me to read some Hawthorne, too, so not a waste of time.

I thought "The Lace Reader" was pretty good, but I thought this one was pretty weak. The plot had some inconsistencies and the characters were just not that interesting to me.

I won this book from the GR First Reads program and I was excited since, although I haven't read The Lace Reader yet, I'd heard so many good things about it. I thought maybe this book would live up to what I heard about The Lace Reader.
Anyway, I was hoping I'd love this book, I was sure I was going to, but I didn't. I just couldn't get into any of the characters and the storyline really bothered me because it all seemed so "convenient" and contrived. Everything was tied up neatly in the end and I just don't ever care for that kind of ending. I didn't like the allusions to reincarnation and I hated the story of Ann, the witch. Witchcraft just isn't something I believe in, not for religious reasons, but because I just don't buy into it. I'd heard that this book contains some of the same characters as The Lace Reader and if Ann is one them, which I suspect she is, I probably won't like that book as much either.
I feel bad about giving the book such a low rating, especially since I was keeping my fingers crossed that I would win it. I really thought this book was going to be for me, but it just wasn't. I bought a copy of The Lace Reader at a library book sale last year, and I'm going to give it a chance, and I really hope I like that one better.

Some fun passages, moderately interesting characters, but after a while I wanted the protagonist to grow up already, quit whining, and get over herself for goodness sake. I like journeys of self-discovery, but this one was a bit protracted.
