Este é um livro que eu chamaria de surpreendente. O que me chamou a a atenção neste livro foi a (bonita) capa que tem! É uma capa com uma bonita letra, selos de cartas (que eu adoro), caneta de tinta permanente..bom é uma capa que facilmente me faz apaixonar. Li a sinopse e gostei! (Ajudou estar a menos de 5 euros na fnac - e eu não resisto a livros tão baratos). Quando o abri dei-me conta que não tinha capítulos, estava dividido em duas partes e era TODO em cartas. A princípio achei estranho mas prontamente fiquei curiosa para ler tanta cartas. A história é simples mas as personagens e as suas vivências não. As personagens são maravilhosas e as histórias são da época da segunda guerra mundial. Juntamos aqui ternura, emoção, comoção, alegria. Juntamos livros, amigos, paisagens e sensações. É um livro de facto envolvente e que nos surpreende. Quando damos conta ja chegamos a meio do livro. O facto de ser em cartas faz-nos querer ler a seguinte e o tempo passa a voar. É um livro com lições. Surpreendeu-me. Fez-me gostar mesmo muito dele. Recomendo. É um livro maravilhoso, este.

Such an easy read and so delightful (do I sound like an 80-year-old bitty using the word delightful? That's the only word I can think to use). I loved it and will reccomend it to everyone I know that loves to read, but I will refuse to lend out my copy.

Second time reading this - enjoyed it as much as the first time.
I just watched the Netflix film of this book and thought they did a pretty good job adapting the story. Of course there are more details in the book :)

The format was a little awkward in the beginning, but, as the book progressed, the letters made the story that much more personal and endearing. You couldn’t help but love all the quirky Islanders and eagerly anticipated Juliet’s discoveries of their stories. Good read! Two thumbs up.

3.0/5 stars If I am being honest, I did not expect to enjoy this book. It is not something I would normally read. However, several people recommended it, and it's a book about books, so I thought I would try it.
Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.
I find epistolary stories fascinating and was quickly drawn into the letters. With so many people writing letters, I was worried I would get lost, but I easily kept everyone straight. I loved the bluntness of the letters, the heartfelt words, and the humor. I loved the idea of becoming friends through letters.
That's what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book, and that tiny thing will lead you onto another book, and another bit there will lead you onto a third book.
I was amazed at the small bookstore sending a book with the invoice, trusting that it would be paid. I really miss the personal touches of a small bookstore, and this book brought back those feelings. We are so used to the big chain bookstores, but it would be lovely to take a trip back in time to visit the small bookstores where the owners knew their customers and cared about them.
I was surprised at the doses of humor in the story and the wealth of emotions I experienced. At first, I was just curious, yet the more I read, the more invested I became in the story and characters. While there are doses of humor, there are also heart-warming, and gut-wrenching moments.
Since I typically read "clean" reads I want to mention there is some language in this book. It was not enough to be distracting and made sense in context.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to those who like epistolary stories, stories about WWII, and historical fiction.
