A fine story, with a creepy, self-interested little protagonist. Eerie, sometimes surprising, and often inviting. Very far from the perfection that the hype had my expecting, and I found myself wishing that the story was shorter and part of a collection. Still, happy to have visited Casares' spooky little island.

Jorge Luis Borges remarked that The Invention of Morel is "a perfect novel." I think he may just kind of have a soft spot for surrealist Latin American fiction. Either way, Morel is an impressively haunting and unique exposition on both the power of unrequited love and the ultimate relevance--or lack thereof--of 'reality'. It was a cool, quick read.

¿Qué decir de este libro? Es una odisea de palabras nuevas y desconocidas, de idealización, de un poco de dolor y de lo que es tan real, de lo que a veces sucede.

โอเค ... นี่เราอยู่ในโลกหนังสือของประเทศอื่นมากเกินไป จนไม่เคยกลับมามองหนังสือจากประเทศตัวเองเลยหรือเปล่านะ ถึงได้คิดว่า แม้แต่ลาตินอเมริกาซึ่งเป็นทวีปที่มีความใกล้เคียงกับเรามากๆ วงการวรรณกรรมของเขายังก้าวกระโดดแบบ beyond the limit ได้อย่างน่าตกใจกว่าประเทศไทย ประเทศที่แนวของหนังสือยังไม่ไปไหนไกลมากนัก วนเวียนอยู่แบบเดิมๆ
เรื่องนี้มีความ absurd แบบเข้าถึงได้ คือ มันเจ๋งดีนะ ที่เค้ามีความคิดแบบนี้กันตั้งแต่ปีสี่ศูนย์
เป็นการผสมผสานกันที่น่าสนใจระหว่างวิทยาศาสตร์และจินตนาการ
อ่านไม่ยากมาก ทั้งการนำเสนอแนวคิดและการใช้ภาษา
แม้อ่านๆไปแล้วจะต้องอ่านย้ำอีกรอบว่า "หะ อะไรนะ"
เรื่องนี้ไม่ได้สนุกจนวางไม่ลง เราใช้เวลาเกือบสองสัปดาห์ถึงจะอ่านจบทั้งๆที่หนังสือบางนิดเดียว แต่ก็เป็นเรื่องที่พอหยิบมาอ่านแล้ว อ่านได้เรื่อยๆ ไม่ทรมาน (แม้จะเป็นหนังสือที่ถูก assigned ให้อ่าน ไม่ได้เลือกมาอ่านเอง ก็ยังอ่านได้เรื่อยๆกว่าหนังสือบางเล่มที่เลือกมาอ่านเองอีกน่ะ 555)
เดี๋ยวต้องอ่านอีกรอบ แต่สำหรับ first impression เราถือว่า เรื่องนี้เป็นหนังสือที่ดีและแนวคิดเจ๋งดี เมื่อเทียบกับปีที่เค้าเขียนขึ้น
(ถึงแม้ตอนนี้แนวคิดประมาณนี้อาจจะธรรมดาไปแล้วก็เถอะ)
