Sweet Thursday, by John Steinbeck

I just love the warmth of Steinbecks characters! Suzy and Fauna are great female characters and can't forget the Doc. I really like the fact that Steinbeck doesn't demonize sex work at all in this novel, instead it's treated like any other profession in the book. The plot is not mindblowing but there's something magical and the humour is always there.

Cannery Row goes all feel-good rom-com. A little bit simplistic at times but somehow it managed to suck me in to the point where even I was cheering for Doc to marry the illiterate prostitute. I might even be willing to concede that maybe Mack isn't such a bad a fellow after all.

Love it, almost as much as Cannery, but not nearly.

Still just as soft and dreamy as Cannery Row.

I liked this story even more than it’s predecessor. The romance was adorable and I had quite a few chuckles throughout. There was much more going on and you got a glimpse into a lot of the townsfolk’s lives. I fell in love with everyone on Cannery Row. They all had such big hearts. I can’t wait to see the movie now.

No one writes characters like Steinbeck. I was debating removing a star for some of the reductive tropes used to describe non-white characters, but I think overall it's outweighed by character complexity and the simply enjoyable plot (and at least Steinbeck includes some diversity? Always hard to judge with older works.)

Fantastic read! No time to write a proper review for the present, but I will get there eventually.
