Poirot books are like a cup of hot tea on a blustery evening-always short and sweet and just mysterious enough to whet my mystery appetite. This case follows Nick Buckley who has been plagued with a series of mysterious accidents at her family home. Poirot and Hastings must work quickly to figure out who is at fault and catch the culprit before anyone gets hurt! Poirot struggles a bit with figuring this one out and it's got a lot of twists and turns.

“To hunt down a murderer after a crime has been committed–c'est tout simple! Or at least it is simple to one of my ability. The murderer has, so to speak, signed his name by committing the crime. But here there is no crime–and what is more we do not want a crime. To detect a crime before it has been committed–that is indeed of a rare difficulty.”

A Poirot story with a little twist I really enjoyed. After meeting Nick Buckley, he is convinced her life is in danger and puts himself on the case, even though he is retired. His speciality lies, however, in finding the criminal after a crime has been committed But rest assured, a crime will be committed, putting Poirot in his comfort zone again.
“Our original task was to ensure the safety of Mademoiselle. Our task now is a much simpler one–a task with which we are well acquainted. It is neither more nor less than the hunting down of a murderer.”
“You call that simpler?”
“Certainly it is simpler. The murderer has, as I said the other day, signed his name to the crime. He has come out into the open.”

I honestly suspected everyone except the real culprit. I really thought I was onto something, but the ending was great and Poirot’s theatrics sealed the deal! Once again, all the puzzle pieces fall into place at the end.

It was alright

I didn’t have a bad time, though I was not super invested in the story. The ending did surprise me and get a :O reaction out of me. Poirot was also a thoroughly entertaining character despite his and everyone else’s remarks about women and people of different religions and ethnicities…

It did drag out a bit and the random sexism and other distasteful commentary took away some of my enjoyment but I look forward to reading some of Agatha Christie’s better works.

It’s a silly little mystery book. I love me some Agatha Christie as a palate cleanser between more serious books. Not a fan of the antisemitic comments, though

This is a really strange book. I suspected the murderer, but I don't think that suggests weak writing. No, I did like the reveal, and I did like the mechanisms of the murder, but it was dull. Nothing was really uncovered through the book in an intelligent or charming way. However, forgiving Christie on style (because not every work can be a banger), she did not salvage this story with charming characters. I felt rather distant from everyone, even Poirot.

In fact, Poirot was rather...nerfed...on purpose through this story. He's old, he's not as smart as he used to be, etc. etc. It's just so uncharacteristic! Listing out all his deductions on a paper too - that took a lot of charm from the story. Oddly, Poirot does so much of what he claims to hate in this book: being the bloodhound! Is it possible to have Poirot be humbled and wronged while still being interesting? I think so, but this book didn't deliver that. "A murder is announced" is another Christie novel that I think did this storyline much better.
