I probably would have loved this as a young person. As an older person, this was just too fantasized and unrealistic.

I was a little surprised by the attempted rape. I was not expecting a scene like that in a Newbery winner. Am I getting stodgy? I feel a little strange knowing that this book is shelved in the children's area.

I initially read this as a sixth grader. I remember that I thought it was a good survival story, but I don't remember much else except that there was a scene of sexual assault in there too.
****Spoiler below
Re-reading it, I am seeing through a different lens. I am asking, who wrote this and what kind of knowledge does she have of the Alaskan people she has in the story? Also, the end was so incredibly sad to me. The time of the Eskimo is over??? What a horrific last line. So I searched a bit online and found this review http://www.ankn.uaf.edu/IKS/HAIL/JulieWolves.html posted on the Alaska Native Knowledge Network. In it, I found that there are many inaccuracies in the book.
I am sure George did her research, but it may have been helpful to have more native people review the story and help with the revisions.
