Quite a convoluted plot, nowhere near as good as The Long Goodbye but still love the writing & setting

A satisfying mystery, with a decent cast of characters. A few cringe-worthy opinions of the times, but at least they don't impact the plot to any degree.

I hated this. felt like some sort of male fantasy: main character so cool and tall and attractive and all the ladies want to sleep with him but he just refuses them. don’t even get me started on the portrayal of women.
Graphic: Misogyny
Moderate: Homophobia

Really didn't enjoy it.
I realize this was the originator for many tropes, but still.
Too much casual violence against women, homophobia and other anachronisms for me.
I loved the small descriptions of things like walking down a damp sidewalk. Very colourful and descriptive.
But I didn't get sucked in and I usually do for mystery books.
