Well written story about getting your dog back. The imagery of the nature-claimed world is immersive. A good mix of plot and character. And dogs.

This started good but got better and better with a few great twists towards the end (and all wholesome even though it is a dark book). There was a lot of anticipation and suspense throughout the book. Times when I was heartbroken and “wanted to look away” or stop listening, since I read this on audiobook.
I liked Griz and the dogs, I liked how things tied together and how there was some breaking of the fourth wall / commentary
The book is emotional and dark yet also hopeful and a refute of nihilistic views towards the end of the world.
Would oddly compare it a bit to Fredrick Backman books even though this has more danger & death. Both write about humanity, morality, purpose & meaning, love/family/relationships, bonds with animals, ethics, religion, imagination/stories.

Review:

The first half was very slow, I would have given that 3 stars. The second half was much better, so that would have been a 4 stars. I really liked the ending.

The story itself was very interesting and good. Especially the concept. It was also pretty haunting to think about.

I would have liked to have a little bit more explanation of the past and what happened there.

I really loved all of the characters, they were very awesome. Jip was one of my favorites.

The twists near the end were very good and the foreshadowing earlier in the book were also well done.

Review previously placed on my blog:

I'm currently reading A boy and his dog at the end of the world by C.A. Fletcher. I was craving sci-fi, so I picked this up at the library.

It's really good and pretty creepy so far. Would probably give it 4, maybe even 5 stars.

I didn't love this as much as I hoped. That was mainly because the first half of the story was very slow. Nothing really happened and the worldbuilding wasn't enough and interesting enough to keep it interesting for me. I would have given the book 3 stars if it wasn't for the second half. There the pace picked up and it became very intriguing. I would have given that part 4 stars, so my final rating is 3,5 stars. I highly recommend this if you like dystopian stories that are more slow and have very good characters and an interesting world. Another one of my favourite characters is in this: the dog Jip.
