Not my genre. I took a leap of faith from my usual reads in fantasy and action, trying something a little more down to Earth and just didn't feel it. Don't get me wrong though, Yolk is very well written.
I really enjoyed the first few chapters and felt that the prose was beautiful. It was like the author looked inside my soul and crawled around in my brain, seeing me completely. The characters are multidimensional and mature, and the story is full of life and family and culture. I stopped reading not because the book was bad, it wasn't, it was actually very good, but it just didn't click for me.

I see the value in this story. I see the skill in the writing. I see the truth in what it says. But it wasnt for me, and that's ok. I'm sure a lot of people out there will love this book and I hope you find it when you need it most, because I truly believe in the right hands, Yolk has the power to help you heal. ❤️

The sisters are veryyyyy unlikeable and they have a TERRIBLE relationship, but by the end of the book you notice that they are only a product of a complicated environment.

I like how the author was able to express all the pain and hurt in this relationship, also the really heavy topics such as eating disorders, racism, bullying and parent abuse. The book felt very fast paced to me as well, and I really enjoyed.

Ps.: I really appreciated the Gilmore Girls references lol

This was my first book by Mary H.K. Choi and now I immediately want to read her others. I generally am picky about the YA books I read. I loved hers because it contained more depth (it seems like it's geared toward an older YA audience).

I loved reading along as Jayne and June reconnected as sisters and were there to support one another through their hardships. I also really enjoyed how modern and relevant the story felt. Choi does a great job at capturing modern times without it feeling cliche.

I will say, this was an emotional story! CW for disordered eating, body image, and cancer.

Awfully raw and heartbreaking. The fact that I can see myself in so many stages inside this book is making it even more real. I feel like an empty shell of a person after finishing it though. I understand how “Yolk” could be triggering in a lot of ways and to that, I would advise people with disordered eating to maybe skip it if they know they wouldn’t feel comfortable hearing about it in such an emotional manner.

I don't really know how to rate this book.
The characters are, in my opinion, unlikable but the author does a great job explaining where they came from.
I didn't love this book, but I can't point any negative aspects.

4.5 stars, I guess.
