I have mixed feelings about this book. This is a dark romance about Sara, a firefighter, and Pestilence, a horseman of the apocalypse. Sara is tasked by her squad to stay behind and kill Pestilence to prevent the spread of the Plague. When this fails, Pestilence kidnaps her and keeps her prisoner. The concept of this book is cool. Falling in love with a physical manifestation of a biblical plague? Awesome! The issue is the execution. Sara is a little young for me, their "romance" feels a little forced, and Pestilence knowing nothing about humans feels wrong. It wasn't bad at all just a little off for me. I will probably eventually read War and the sequels but not now.

Oscillating between a 4 or 5 here. Will decide when finishing the series. I started reading it more as a joke, you have got to be kidding me, Pestilence as a romantic interest? But then I ended up getting all caught up in that story. The blend of an inhuman character, a badass FMC, a story that highlights both how horrible and how wonderful we can be toward each other as humans, and some christian mythology old testament was a mix that somehow worked.

Absolutely obsessed with this series!
Pestilence's development is emotional and thrilling, and emotions are high throughout.
A true enemies to lovers.

Although I occasionally found Sara's dialogue cringy, I still absolutely adored this book. Sara's strength, and Pestilence's steadfast love & longing makes this a wonderful read. It still held up just as well the second time around.

Laura Thalassa also did a wonderful job of portraying all the other types of people: those who forgive endlessly, those who fight cruelly, those who continue to care for others when they know it will kill them too. It was wonderful reading about them, and how mercy might be applied to them or from them.
