There is nothing meaningful I can add to the shouts of praise already heaped on Acevedo. She deserves every bit. I’m thrilled to see this book selected for summer reading lists in the schools my library serves. Let’s give more books like this to our teens.

I didn't expect to like a book written in verse
But it was sooooo good. I think it had everything to do with the concept. Totally enjoyed this.

This novel was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It was written in slam poetry verse. I recommend listening to the audio to get the full slam poem feel (it’s performed so well).
The story was great! I just loved it!

Beautiful writing! Well worth listening to the audio book, even if you generally avoid audio books

This was fantastic. I was shocked to learn that Xiomara was a fictional character because the story felt so personal and real. I loved the family dynamics and the story progression. I'm so impressed with the author's ability to write such a detailed character and to tell a story through poetry. I've never read anything like this before.

The audiobook is beautifully narrated by the author. It is more like listening to a performed poem than a book.
Xiomara is a 15 year old girl in a mature body. The boys all want one thing from her, and the girls all think she gives it to them. Her mom is a super strict Catholic. Her dad is present, but pretty much ignores X and her twin. Twin is super smart and goes to a nice high school. X struggles to fit in at her school, but has no friends there.
X escapes her life through writing poetry, and becomes super excited about a new club at school except she knows her mom won't let her go. X begins to have feelings for her lab partner, but she's not allowed to date. Ever.
I loved the way the author wrote. You felt X's emotions. It wasn't teenage angst, but true emotions.
