i am giving this maybe more stars than i might have otherwise simply because i'm so enamored with nina lacour's prose. she writes with a really light and thoughtful touch, skimming over flashes of light, sudden smells, in a way that actually helps you understand the full weight of a character's emotions in a much deeper way than simply having said emotions described. and that's heightened in this book that is so much about the beauty of spaces, the complex flavors of drinks. it's a very aerated book and very beautiful. and i think emilie's and sara's character arcs are things i needed to read in my 20s, and not before, to understand. i thought the alternating timelines and perspectives braided together well -- this book is really a lot less about romantic love than about what we bring with us every time we interact with another person. really lovely and i am excited to read more of lacour's work!

One of those books where the ending serves the story so well that you give up other criticisms like the pacing and the tone

Oh this was such a devastating and lovely read. The start of the book was so heartbreaking I didn’t know if I’d be able to make it through the rest, but it was so worth it. Emilie and Sarah are so important to me, they were so well written they feel like old friends who I want to check in on. I will definitely need to come back for a reread on this one.
