Let me start by saying that you really need to read the previous books in this series (in order) to really understand the mind set of the people involved and how their relationship works. It is dark and somewhat masochist/sadistic yet it is what the h/H each need. If you go into this book without having all the background, you will find yourself not only confused, but probably fuming as well at the Hero's treatment towards the heroine. If you've read the other books then you know what to expect in terms of the darkness.

This book starts a few months after book four ends. The couple are living off the grid, moving from location to location trying to stay hidden from 'the bad guys.' Rafe still gets turned on by causing pain and having control over Alex, and she still needs the pain he inflicts to keep away the nightmares. The h/H are the only people involved in the majority of this book (as they are hidden away,) but his friend, Jax, reappears with a newcomer to the story, and there is a surprise cameo from an old acquaintance or two. This does end with cliffhanger. Nothing was resolved in this book, no answers given... just more 'What's going to happen to them now?' There is a brief moment of happiness for the two, but it was just that.... brief. (Which is nothing new with these two people... not that is was their fault, as trouble seems to follow them.)

There are some cringe worthy moments, and this series really isn't for the faint of heart. The sexual content is the primary factor to this book/series. It really is what drives these two people. They know they are "f*cked up" (due to the things that have happened to them in the past,) and they know they will never live 'normal lives.' If you enjoy these gritty and dark/evil type of books, you won't find many that you will enjoy more than this series. It's a great story in that disturbed kind of way. The characters are written perfectly for their roles.

My only compliant... Rafe is constantly having to punish Alex for doing things he deems unsafe/unhealthy (because she needs it to learn, and often seems a tad extreme) or forcing her to do things she is terrified of to help her get over those fears and become a stronger person, but anytime she stands up for herself or tries to push him to do the same, she is punished more. I feel there should be a little more give and take on his part. He's trying to help her, but won't let her help him. This makes me like him a little less. I understand where he is coming from, but it feels like he's being a hypocrite. Just because he gets off on the control, doesn't mean he can't occasionally let her have a little of it, and who knows, maybe he'll heal along the way too.

It's written from alternating POVs. Flows smoothly, and reads easily. If you haven't figured it out by now, it is definitely meant for mature readers. Not only for the sexual content but for the subject matter as well.

*I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

Jax again. At least he didn’t let him punish her. It’s just icky. More ginger too. I’ve read about ginger in books lots of times but I hate it in this one. Just yuck.
