Nouwen encourages you to live out your questions regarding life instead of trying to find someone to answer them for you. "Spiritual guidance affirms the basic quest for meaning. It calls for the creation of space in which the validity of the questions does not depend on the availability of answers but on the questions' capacity to open us to new perspectives and horizons" (9). "What matters most, what transforms, is the influence of a humble, vulnerable witness to the truth" (10).

This book is a collection of essays and writings put together after Nouwen’s death. And you can tell- it lacks the feeling of wholeness that comes from an intentionally structured book project by one author. This isn’t to slight those who put it together; they did a great job. It simply is what it is.

As always, Nouwen has wisdom to share. Much of it you have likely read in other places if you are familiar with him. But I still found myself grateful for his voice.

Whatever you think of Nouwen's theology (I certainly don't agree with him on many points), his writing is full of rich, thought-provoking insights. Worth a read.

For Lent I have been exploring spiritual direction and I ran across this book in a local library. I am so glad I found it. This is a compilation of things that Nouwen wrote or said on spiritual direction. It would be a great small group book.

Each chapter leads the reader on a path to a better understanding of how one's spiritual life can be improved, including group and individual activities.

I found two parts of this book especially helpful. There is an appendix that talks about how to find a spiritual director. Also there is a wonderful prayer, The Beloved Prayer that I find wonderful.
