I expected to like this more given the great reviews. But it was far too long, extremely slow, and I figured out the ending, which I can't do on really well written mysteries. I can only guess that I had so much time to think about ending possibilities while reading it that it just came to me. I usually love historical mysteries, but this fell far short for me.

A potent concoction of crime novel and historical novel, with a side of gothic horror.

First in a series. Matthew Shardlake is a lawyer in King Henry the VIII's time. This mystery was centered around the dissolution of the large monasteries in England after Henry declared himself the head of the church. Tudor history was interesting and believable. I would be interested to read the next in the series.
