My kids like this more than I do. I find all the dialogue to be quite perfunctory and repetitive... BUT I was really impressed with how many of the facts in this book were learned and retained by my 5-year-old son. For example, we started reading and Eyewitness Ocean book after this and he recognized the HMS Challenger which was mentioned in both books, as well as the image of the Nautilus, and knew what it was. Very cool! WE were given this book with a few others, so we started here because my son picked it out, but I'd like to start at the beginning of the series. Luckily, each book has a little "recap" intro so it's ok if you don't read them in order- you won't be totally lost, even though things are mentioned from previous books.

It was nice to see that they were able to learn more about the ocean through the scientists, even though they felt like they knew enough about it already. How they handled the octopus situation was actually more thought out than I anticipated, definitely was not expecting the outcome.
On to the next one.

These books are so hard to review.

Predictable, perhaps a bit scarier than most (if you have a child that relates to animals). My 6yo liked it just fine.

So far this has been our favorite Magic Tree House book!! We read it at least 30 times before having to return it to the library, but I have a feeling we'll be buying our own copy. I love how these books weave educational info into a fun story - and this particular book teaches the importance of compassion.
