3 1/2 stars. Maisie gets involved with a Belgian ambassador in investigating the murder of a refugee. Learning the history of the dead man that goes back to the first war, Maisie quickly realizes others are in danger. Great historical detail in this one around Belgian refugees and a nation on the cusp of a Second World War. Also enjoyed the storyline with the children evacuated from London into the country and how Maisie and her dad and stepmother housed and interacted with them. I’ve enjoyed how Maisie’s character has evolved through the series - through triumph, tragedy, and a lot of self-reflection.

Nice to have Maisie return to some of the original type of format, but with a more complex character and tale. Still would love for her to be happy at some point.

Just can't get enough of this series: mystery & historical fiction- two of my favorite genres. In This Grave Hour centers around the start of Britain entering WW2 and I really like the direction Winspear is taking the characters and the storyline.

A solid historical fiction detective mystery set in WWII Britain when war was declared. Lovely clear old fashioned writing, with a few too many characters to keep track of.

I seem to be reading books with female protagonists during World Wars, this one taking place just as World War II was declared out in England. Our intrepid detective who seems to have too many hours in a day investigates the death of a Belgian refugee, which seems to lead to more and more death.

WWII starts and Maisie is working on mystery that goes back to WWI. The historical parallels and sense of the experience of preparing for war are strong. Maisie continues to struggle with her tendency to interfere with other people’s lives.
