I LOVED this book. I just read the trilogy a couple of months ago (where have I been?! also, dystopian is not my thing) so everything was nice and fresh in my mind. I thought this was a fascinating look at how things used to be, and a great intro to how they got to where they are in HG. Sometimes I think everyone on goodreads just wants to complain. I devoured this book and couldn't wait to discuss it with someone else who had read it.

it should be known that this is not a hunger games book, this is a character book. that being said....... what was that

the story was incredibly slow, and even the very important events were downplayed. however, i like open endings, and this one was pretty much perfect.

there was no romanticizing of snow, and his cruelty was visible even in his teenage years and only grew.

i feel like this could have been much better. oh well

This story felt flat to me. I actually hate Snow more after reading this and I didn’t think that was actually possible. The ‘romance’ was weird and felt forced. I had a hard time getting through this and was happy for it to be done.

It was great to return to the world of Panem. To explore the capital before they regained their wealth again was very interesting. Snow's backstory was well crafted. I wish there was a tad more tracing where the book ended to the rest of the series (maybe a series of 'journal' entries) but I think it is easily imagined to how he ended up where he did. I'm going to go reread the rest of the books with this new information.
