A lot of the elements of this book are things that appeal to me, but in execution it just didn’t work for me.
Doyle does a wonderful job of creating a really believable, drawn out conversation between two old friends who have remained connected but not close. The book really feels like tracking this conversation between two middle aged men. And I guess that’s maybe where it didn’t work for me, because I was so bored for much of this. Because part of what makes them believable 50-something men is their (self-identified) inability to articulate what they are feeling or mean, this ended up feeling like a character study where I didn’t really learn anything about the characters.
