Poor Max...Ruby treats him like a mental defective. All he wants is to make a caterpillar dirt cake and he keeps messing up his sister's pink cake ingredients. So he has to go to the store again and again for her. Each time, he hopes to get some Red Hot Marshmallow Squirters to no avail. This is an enduring charmer no matter how many times you read it.

Phillip's favorite part of this book is the endpapers, where he asks the name of every item pictured.

Bunny siblings Max and Ruby go about making a birthday cake for their Grandma, each in their own special way. This Max and Ruby picture book by [a:Rosemary Wells|3105|Rosemary Wells|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1242752943p2/3105.jpg] shows that if you make something for someone you love with love, no matter what it is, the person will accept and love it in the spirit it was given.

This is a really cute story. Max keeps messing up Ruby's cake-baking plans, and can't seem to get the grocer to understand his writing. A happy ending for everyone, with lots of hilarity along the way. Good for a birthday or cooking theme, but has lots of words, so maybe 4+?

One of my favorite Max and Ruby stories. It's also a great read to introduce emergent literacy!
