This book is certainly a challenging read. It is not a page-turner at all, but it is an interesting read nevertheless.
From the very prologue you are going to be juggling multiple timeliness and flashbacks and flash forwards. Chapters in the "present" interchange with the chapters taking the reader further and further in past, crescending into the very end of the book. It all makes the narrative beautifully intertwined if, admittedly, rather hard to follow.
All of this non-linear narrative serves to answer the question: who is Cheradenine Zakalve and what made him the person we see?
While finding the answer to that question, the book dabbles in other, more philosophical and ethical questions about war, responsibility and redemption.
