Honestly this book should have been like 1/2 of one book or even just a few chapters. The fact that she keeps on loving Midas in a ridiculously abusive situation is drug out and honestly means there’s very little plot movement. There’s several moments in this book that are icky.

A lot of rape and prostitution and a cruel king. Could have been summed up. Book 1 and 2 should have been combined.

The premise was intriguing, but it steadily went downhill. Imo this book mostly suffers from being too long. I have this problem frequently when reading YA/ NA romance and fantasy; the setup isn't bad but they need some serious editing down. I appreciate a book that can communicate plot and character development effectively, without filling up space with unnecessary and uninteresting details. The entire middle of the book when they were traveling was so dull.

Also, it was just unenjoyable content. I understand that's probably the point- it is about a bunch of royal concubines after all- but it's just not a fun time to read about these women being miserable, abused, assaulted, and experiencing Stockholm syndrome. I've heard the second book is better in general, but her writing style is so slow and uninspiring I don't think I can give it a chance.
