the adults are extremely extremely stupid here damn (except for uncle monty ofc) and the redundant writing is kinda getting to me but the baudelaires were brilliant as always <3 wish we got much more scenes with uncle monty though
Moderate: Death

This is my favourite of the series, I love the snakes, particularly the Incredibly Deadly Viper!
2022: I really enjoyed this re-read, this is still probably my favourite of the series. Monty is fun and the Incredibly Deadly Viper is great. This is the first book in which we get to see what becomes the usual way of things for the Baudelaire children: they arrive with a new guardian, Olaf turns up in disguise with a plan, no-one believes them when they try to expose him.
Again I somehow always manage to forget just how nasty Olaf is and the lengths he will go to, to try to get the Baudelaire fortune. It's interesting how this series can cover drastic events and yet always seem to maintain a light-hearted feel. It also surprises me that you are told right at the start how this book is going to turn out and yet it doesn't in anyway detract from the story.
Overall, this was a very fun reread, with plenty of bits that were fun to rediscover.
