Sorry to have kept this so long but there was a death in the family in May which involved a trip to South America, and life if just now getting back to normal.

This was a mixed bag for me. I ultimately thought that he worked well with the questions of identity and racial discrimination especially with regards to the children who were of mixed race and rejected by both sides. I felt though that the book was slow, overambitious and that it took off on too many tangents, which made it a bit of a slog at times.

Thanks rapturina for organizing! This is being mailed out today to passiontoread.

After reading three quarters of this book I still can't get into it. Don't like the characters or the writing style. Abandoning...

Just brilliant. The lyricism of the prose, the compulsion of the narrative(s), the thesis statement of race and gender being a construction that is fluid and informed so heavily by confirmation bias — all with the frankly humiliating revelation that this is Kunzru's first novel. All brilliant.

A hefty swipe at colonialism and its very personal results, following a young boy who journeys from his native India to Oxford University and eventually to Africa, forever trying to be someone else. The rich descriptions, beautiful prose and wonderfully insightful themes made this a joy to read. It is a very long book - over 500 pages in fairly small print - but definitely one I would recommend, providing you have the time to really enjoy it in a couple of sittings.
