I’m giving this one 4 stars even, and it would have been much less but the very very end came as a little surprise. There were several times through this one where I was so annoyed by the FMC. Like… how many times can you ignore red flags before I should consider you to be a red flag? Ugh!! But also, the fact that the author was able to elicit that type of frustration from me shows her skill. I do plan on reading more from her.

My first thriller. My first Freida McFadden book and I’m telling you now, it won’t be the last. I reached for this book solely because the blurb sounded so good and I was not wrong. I ate this book up and left no crumbs.

The Inmate follows Brooke, a nurse practitioner in a men’s high security prison. The men in the prison are the worst of the worst, and that includes Shane Nelson, Brooke’s first boyfriend, who was convicted of murdering 3 of her friends and attempted to murder her 11 years ago. When she finally comes face to face with Shane after all that time, she begins to wonder if she got it wrong. If she sent an innocent man to prison, because after all she never actually saw the face of the murderer and there was one other person it may have been.

This book kept me so engrossed the whole way through the book. I couldn’t put it down wondering if she was right to suspect she’d help sentence the wrong man. I loved the alternating timelines, so it felt like we were reliving the memory along with Brooke.

One word to sum up the ending: Shocked. The ending was insane and I’m still thinking of all the plot twists days later. I can’t wait to read more Freida McFadden books and dive into more thrillers!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Tropes include:
  • Gripping Psychological Thriller
  • Who did it?
  • Single Mom
  • Dual Timeline
  • Plot Twist Galore!

The book is interesting and fast paced but also a bit unbelievable especially toward the end.

Another amazing book from Freida! I just couldn’t put it down and had to keep reading to find out what happened. Brooke gets a job at a prison and has to remember the three rules of not telling people personal information, not getting too friendly with inmates and to treat all prisoners with respect. However, what the staff at the prison don’t know is that Brooke knows someone who is incarcerated there (Shane) as he is her ex boyfriend from all those years ago - thus meaning she’s already broken a rule!
I thought I’d figured it out early on but it turns out there were more people involved than first thought. I loved the suspense in every chapter as it kept you guessing who was involved with the past crimes. But the twists just keep coming and the more that unravelled, the more shocked I became. Honestly loved this book so much hence why I’ve read it so quick, it really kept me hooked and trying to guess what happened next.
100% recommend!!
