I’m sad to say that a lot of these stories went right over my head.

The stories I instantly liked and connected with are “The Long and Painful Death”, “The Forester’s Daughter” and “Close to the Water’s Edge”. After a bit of research I also warmed up to “Surrender”. The others - I don’t know.

To fully appreciate these short stories I’d recommend some background reading if you’re not very familiar with Irish culture/folklore or Christianity. What I can say is that they are really well crafted, precise and without a single word wasted. It’s Keegans handwriting, for sure.

This book shows an extremely real, tense and emotionally raw account of growing up and living in rural Ireland. Themes of isolation, parental expectations, parental relationships and marriage. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an insight into Irish life and culture in the late 1900s, early 2000s.

Como todas as coleções de short stories uma são mais ao nosso gosto que outras.
Em geral Claire Keegan mantém-se uma autora indispensável na minha lista com uma escrita intimista que nos faz sentir na ação ainda que apenas como observador.

Some stories are 5/5 while one or two are 4s. More stories than not end up lodged firmly in your mind. A desperately good writer.
