A lot of what didn't work for me were the writing choices, this book did two things that I find exhausting which is over explaining concepts and a million POVs. And most of those POVs exist to overexplain the plot and what is going on with each piece as it moves. I just wish the author had more faith in her readers. This book is 500+ pages but feels like a prologue to the actual story. This isn't to say others won't like this book, it's got a lot going for it, particularly the rot and associated magic systems, and interesting characters (Bhumika!) But the structure was hard for me to get past

Spoiler wlw, clean, fantasy, magic

Tasha Suri writes a story quite unlike any book I've ever read before. Her prose and the inventive use of multiple POVs truly create a multi-layered world the encaptures the reader. I can honestly say I've never read a book quite like it, in the absolute best of ways. The world building was so in-depth, so meticulously thought out, that I felt I completely understood the world Suri created. Reading this was like solving a puzzle without meaning to. Suri's writing guides the reader along a truly incredible path that allows the reader deepen their understanding of the world without having to consciously try to decipher it. This book is what I would consider the very best of the high fantasy genre.

It was definitely a wild ride! There was a lot to set up for this fantasy novel so it took me a minute to get into it. But I did get into it eventually! When I did, I was mostly interested in the two main characters and their love story. But that’s not actually what the majority of the book is about 😆. I wish it was! There’s no spice, but they’re together in the fight to get to the top and be in power which was interesting to follow. I probably won’t keep going in the series but I did enjoy the story and would recommend for those that love fantasy.

A very interesting read, in which deep worldbuilding and a mix of romance, politics, and religion and very well interweaved. Unfortunately I only really enjoyed one character and not too deeply, but the plot was very well done and I will be reading more eventually.
