Unique and interesting magic system, but all in all the story was... fine?

While I did enjoy this book, and I feel like the ending elevated it from three stars to three and a half stars, I think that it really would have benefited from losing about a hundred pages. 640 pages was just too long and while there was stuff happening the whole time, the book still felt slow paced. Not a specific hundred pages, I just don't think that we needed to see everything in such detail.
I did enjoy the ending, I thought it was a rather satisfying conclusion. I'm not sure Brandon Sanderson is the author for me though, because I personally find his writing very 'telling rather than showing' and while I don't always need a lot of flowery descriptions and deep character introspection, again, 640 pages is a lot to just be told what is happening. If you like books where you just turn your brain off and have the story happen at you, then you'll like this book.
And while I definitely didn't predict all of the plot twists, the one about
Spoiler the Lord Ruler not being the one who wrote the logbook
was kind of obvious by the time it was revealed.
Also the extreme amount of parallels between
Spoilerthis book and Brandon Sanderson's own Steelheart
just made me kind of mad.
SpoilerAt the end it felt like I'd just read the same book in a different font.

The Mistborn trilogy has dystopian world building, magic, interesting characters that you either love or love to hate, and a fast-paced plot. There are no dragons, fae, or shapeshifters. But there are Allomancers aka people who can burn metals to gain superhuman abilities.

The story can be summed up as one giant heist to destroy the evil, immortal Lord Ruler and free the Skaa from the abusive nobles once and for all. Of course there are obstacles to overcome, magical duels to fight, court politics to play, and ultimately, the small feat of figuring out how to actually kill the Lord Ruler.

My small grievance is the almost laughable “romantic” relationship and the absolute lack of spice. Don’t get me wrong, I very much appreciated that the heroine was a badass, strong, and resourceful woman who don’t need no man. But damn, it was more vanilla than vanilla.

“Belief isn’t simply a thing for fair times and bright days, I think. What is belief—what is faith—if you don’t continue in it after failure?”

What an amazing, fun, heartbreaking ride was reading this book!!!!!

I've been watching book reviews on YouTube for years now, and The Mistborn trilogy was always one that was highly recommended. At the time, I only read YA or romance books (2010's) and I was scared to not know or understand a High Fantasy book like this one.

Although not much has changed with the books I normally gravitate too, this year I decided to get out of my comfort zone and reading this series was on the top of my list.

WOW this was fun, at times exhilarating and overall an fantastical book with amazing plot and characters. I won't go into details about the story or anything like that, its far to complicated for me to explain and I just finished the book, so there are things in my mind that need to be sorted out. But needless to say, I really enjoyed reading The Final Empire, I loved the characters (Vin, Kelsier, Sazed, Breeze, Elend), the found family aspect and how despite being high fantasy, was easy to follow. Don't get me wrong, there are things I still don't understand but at the same time, it was not as complicated that I made it seem.

Can't wait to see what happens next!!!

Lots of effort put into magic system and physics behind it. Story set up for some detailed world building likely in later books. Subplots fed into main plot nicely. Would be interested in more female characters (barely passed the Bechdel test) and a more well rounded protagonist.

Vin is living a life of pure survival. She gets by helping people steal and trying not to get beaten too bad. When she uses her talents on the wrong person and is discovered her life is forever changed. Vin learns that there are people out there that want more than mere survival, they want to live.

Vin joins up with Kelsier and his team to try and overthrow the lord ruler. Vin does not believe this will ever happen, but she wants to do something. As Kelsier teaches her to use her powers it becomes clear that she is special.

This is a great book. Found family, striving not just surviving, everything you want from a fantasy.

I’m so glad I’ve enter into the Cosmere! I started my Brandon Sanderson journey with the Skyward series and now I’ve moved to the behemoth that is the Cosmere. I love the world, I love the characters, and I especially love the mystery of it all. I can’t wait to devour all the books!
