I liked this mystery with its personal connections to Cat. Good read.

I'm not a fan of the romance side of the characters taking up so much of this book. It felt like that over powered the rest of the story. And i didn't feel like it was in line with the past books. The characters felt needy and moody. The end where Cat just stumbles upon the kiler confessing seems off. She doesn't investigate. It felt like we were just stumbling through a book. I love this series! I love Lynn Cahoon. Just maybe not this one piece.

One liner: Another murder at a writer’s retreat.

The Cat Latimer series is one of my favorite cozy mystery series.  Set in a small Colorado college town with rumored ties between the college and the mob, this little community has more than their fair share of murders.  And YA fantasy author always seems to get wrapped up in them.  Once again, the murder happens right in the middle of a writer’s retreat she is hosting.  Luckily she is adept at solving murders and inspiring writers at the same time.

I listened to this version on audible when I normally read them.  Because I am so many books in, the narrator’s dramatization and voices for the characters didn’t matched what I had set in my mind for the world I have come to love.  They narration quality was good, but created a frustrating distraction for me personally. I will keep reading the books but will probably shy away from the audiobooks for this series in the future.

Opening any new cozy by Lynn Cahoon transports you to a world full of old friends you can’t wait to sit down and spend time with whether it be a gentle coastal community in California, a rural farming community in River Vista, Idaho and it’s magical neighbor Magic Springs or in this case Aspen Hills, Colorado. Murder may be necessary for the genre but it’s quickly overshadowed by the trials and tribulations of Cat’s life as Christmas nears. Finding a wedding dress for her upcoming wedding isn’t going so well. Her agent has called and pushed up her deadline on her latest and possibly last Tori novel that’s she’s barely begun. Seth seems to be missing in action and when he is around they’re at odds. It’s also the last writers’ retreat week of the year and yep, that means as soon as they get the guests to their rooms one of them ends up dead. When the dead guy has a link to Cat’s dead ex husband Michael and the impossibly handsome yet most likely dangerous mob boss Dante, Cat’s life couldn’t get any more complicated. As tempted as it could be for Cat to hightail it to California with Shawna on a wedding gown hunt and let Uncle Pete solve the case she sticks to her guns, gets her daily word count in and finds a killer before all of the Christmas lights are hung.
