I can't articulate exactly why, but the writing bothered me from the very first chapter and it never got better. I almost felt I was reading a textbook that was relaying historical events rather than a novel. Some topics had so much detail that led you to believe something significant was about to happen, but there was never a payoff. Other major events, such as characters dying, were explained away with nothing more than a paragraph. A great editor could have done wonders with this story.

Also, I wish the author had either made this book entirely non-fiction or made it fictional with a true story as inspiration. Passing some of these events off as real life when they were embellished cheapened Pino's story (see the Q&A section where Pino's son Michael gives a lot of details).
