One of my favorite YA books I’ve read in a long time! Beautifully written.

Heartbreaking but just a little angsty to be a five star read for me (always with YA. Always.). Juniper is a bright light and Ethan’s story is both heartbreaking and hopeful. Love the examples of how people can change. Lots of forgiveness. Great book.

This book takes place in 1955 when Ethan, a biracial child, is sent to live with relatives in a racist small town in Alabama he is forced to confront racism more head on.  He befriends a white girl named Juniper, who seems to be the only one that wants to get to know him.  She has created a list of things that she wants to do during the summer and she gets Ethan to help her complete the list.  I thought that this is a good MG book.  It deals with racism and what it was like for black people during that time.  I don't think that my boys would like it because they prefer books that have more comedy/fantasy in them, which this does not.  The book reminded me a lot of the movie My Girl.

Books don’t usually make me cry but this one did. What a beautiful coming of age story of friendship in the backdrop of Jim Crow south

This was such a beautifully written book. It was both uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. It is as timely today as it was during the 1950's which is the time period in which the book is set. It takes themes of racism and discrimination, but also love and friendship.

This book tells the story of Ethan Harper a biracial boy who is sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle in Alabama during the Jim Crow era. Here he faces the struggle of not fitting in and facing discrimination from the people who live in the town. He meet Juniper Jones, a quirky teenager who is also struggling with her place in the community.

These two become fast friends and Juniper promises Ethan that they will have an "invincible" summer. The story takes place over the summer and the follows the adventures that they partake in. This book tackles some really tough issues, but definitely makes it relatable to the YA crowd. You'll be rooting for this friendship, but will also know early on that there are dark days to come.

A biracial boy and free-spirited white girl become best friends in small-town Alabama in 1955. It is impossible not to fall in love with the charming and utterly pure Juniper Starfish Jones. For Ethan, who had never faced such unmitigated, blatant racism before, June’s friendship and kindness are all that are getting him through an otherwise terrible summer. Their story is adorable, quirky, fun, important, relevant, and heartbreakingly beautiful. Be prepared to experience laughter, tears, and every expression of emotion in between. I read this book in a single setting; I couldn’t put it down! Ethan and June are extraordinary characters. I will not soon forget them. 5 enthusiastic stars!
