I wish I could give half stars. I really liked the story and the characters but often got confused as to what was happening to whom at any point in time. I find this odd because I normally don't encounter this issue. I also am still interested in investing more time into this series, despite mediocre rating I gave it. That's a testament to the overall quality of the characters and the story, even if I often found it hard to follow.

Enjoyable when you’re sick but the lack of female characters and the one female character that does appear falls for one of the main characters? Reduced my rating

If I wanted to read The Lord of the Rings, I would read The Lord of the Rings. I understand the book is from a different era and it helped define the genre, but just being old is no excuse to having no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Text is dry and repetitive, and saying the characters are like cardboard is an insult to cardboard as material. Even the setting ended up being disappointing; I came for the post-apocalyptic Earth-turned fantasy world, got left with a vague feeling of confusion and, ultimately, boredom.

I only finished this title because I bought the Shannara book bundle from Humble Bundle and didn't want to admit right away it was a mistake.
