Fun as seeing the Incan dragons was, I wasn't a fan of this book. Iskierka, in particular, really annoyed me. Firstly, she should have grown up a bit by now. Her willfulness seems like just an excuse for Novik to throw obstacles at the characters, and I see no real signs of growth. Secondly, given how uncontrollable she is, it makes no sense to send her on a diplomatic mission, especially when they're in the middle of a war where her talents surely could be put to better use.

Naomi Novik once again comes up with a different and very interesting way that the dragon/human world could have worked. I'm absolutely invested in her strong world building and the fact that dragons, consistent across the species, come up with a myriad of different ways of interacting with their humans.

This book made it so different from the already plentifully different ways that humans and dragons interacted that it was very compelling.

It’s always a delight to read another Temeraire book - I’m happy to follow this ragtag bunch of dragons and aviators to any continent! As always, there was adventure and aerial battles and sweet moments of friendship, and I had a lovely time reading.

A man learns things he wish he didn't know about the men in his circle. A dragon learns yet another way of looking at the men within his sphere of protection.
