I love Deanna Raybourn but I will probably not continue on with the next about Delilah. This novella was boring

I've read two of Deanna Raybourn's introductory novellas and none of them enticed me to pick up the main novel. Both novellas had somewhat intriguing set-ups but my aversion of the early 20th century era might have reduced my enthusiasm. And unlike the Lady Julia Series, these characters aren't interesting enough for me to care, let alone want to learn more about them.

An interesting and intriguing glimpse into the lives of a group of characters in London in 1914 before the reality of the Great War has set in. I look forward to seeing what happens next.

I really enjoyed this book, though I kinda thought that this couple was Jude and her husband from A Spear of Summer Grass, which was confusing me. But they're not, and yeah, this book links the Lady Julia series to these books! Yeah!

I knew we’d see Delilah and Johnny, but the second I saw the last name “March,” I couldn’t read fast enough. Oh, the Easter eggs in this little story is! Tarquin and Perdita? Julia’s name for the office? Thank goodness I already have City of Jasmine and can launch into that immediately.

Whisper of Jasmine is the companion / prequel novella to the soon-to-be released [b:City of Jasmine|14435190|City of Jasmine|Deanna Raybourn|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1387395899s/14435190.jpg|20077299]. Having received and reviewed and arc copy of City of Jasmine, I will say that I really enjoyed reading this prequel. Deanna Raybourn did a good job here of not only introducing readers for what is to come in City of Jasmine, but expanding upon Delilah Drummond's story from [b:A Spear of Summer Grass|16074560|A Spear of Summer Grass|Deanna Raybourn|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1356914412s/16074560.jpg|19200712]. Having read Summer Grass recently as well, I found this part of the story bittersweet knowing the events that take place soon after.

I'm torn as to whether I enjoyed this story more since I've already read the full-length companion novel. I think that may be the case. I liked experiencing / learning about Evie and Gabriel's relationship after the fact and Whisper of Jasmine just filled in the rest of the blanks from their recollections.

As of now (2/3/14) this book is available free on kindle. I almost want to say buy it now, but wait to read until you've read City of Jasmine. If you're new to Deanna Raybourn or you are torn as to read City of Jasmine or not, pick this up to help decide. I personally look forward to more stories from Ms. Raybourn written in this time period.

In this novella, dashing explorer and archaeologist Gabriel Starke meets quiet dreamer Evangeline Merriweather at a New Year's party thrown by their socialite friend Delilah Drummond. While Delilah most certainly intended to matchmake at the party, she had picked out completely different partners for both of them. Instead, Gabriel and Evie are instantly smitten with each other, and over the course of an evening, fall hard enough for each other that they decide to elope to Scotland. There are quite a few things that Gabriel isn't at liberty to tell Evie, however.
