After reading a lot of grimdark books before this, it was nice to change things up with a lighter, more high fantasy read. The world itself is refreshingly bright from months of being down in the dark and muck that is grimdark. While there are some serious themes in this book, the narrative does not fixate on them too heavily. The plot lopes along, never getting bogged down in detail as fantasy is want to do, which makes it an easy read. With a cast of mostly female characters, The Cloak of Challiver touches on a many feminine issues that I’ve rarely (read never) seen tackled in any other fantasy, which makes, again, a nice change. Lastly, before reading this, be sure to read the prequel to this story, The Dagger of Dresnia, as even though this story is set 20 years later, the characters and events play a major role in this next story.
