Ah, good timing. I just watched Top Gun: Maverick in theatres, so this spaceship training book was spot-on.

I was frankly blown away by the perfect merge of science fiction with YA books here. The MC is hard to like from the outside looking in—because she starts kinda arrogant, or rather, a lot arrogant—but the character growth from everyone was excellent and this book has a real [b:Honor Among Thieves|30129657|Honor Among Thieves (The Honors, #1)|Rachel Caine|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498066244l/30129657._SY75_.jpg|50559346] vibe. People die, stakes are huge, but they're also well understandable for a YA reader. Very well handled emotional roller coaster.

Also, I gotta note this because I was sure Brandon Sanderson would create a female character that would be grating, but credit where it is due: this is not a bad "dude wrote a girl's POV" at all! The girl is scrappy, but as a woman (who can only speak for herself), I was not in any way offended by the female portrayal written by a guy here.

The rest of the series seems to delve really hard into technical sci-fi, so I’m going to end here on a high note for myself—but I’d recommend this for anyone who wanted a little sci-fi with their Top Gun.

This was so great!! I have been in a Space/Sci-Fi mood lately and this was the perfect book to pick up. M-Bot is definitely my favorite character. I seriously don't think I have laughed out loud that much while reading in a while! 5 well-deserved stars.

I really enjoyed the concept of this book but found it a little to long for the first book in a YA series. I started to struggle mid way through due to the annoying ship and was incredibly tempted to DNF but I am glad that I made it to the end. The end of this book gives me hope for the rest of the series.

If you are struggling mid way through, I encourage you to push to the end because I do believe that it is worth it. After seeing many different reviews I believe this is a series that gets better as it goes along so I am hopeful that I will rate the 2nd book higher.

All of the stars! Can't believe I have to wait until fall for the sequel! I need more Doomslug and M-Bot in my life stat. Here are my favorite quotes from the book-

"Just for that, I shall hunt your firstborn children and laugh with Glee as I tell them of your death in terrible detail, with many unpleasant adjectives!"

"A pox of unique human diseases-many of which cause an uncomfortable swelling- come upon you!"

"Tremble and fear, all enemies! For we shall shake the air with thunder and blood! Your doom is imminent"

"Good night, sweet prince,” M-Bot whispered as the junk crashed to the ground. “Or princess. Or, most likely, genderless piece of inanimate space junk."

So if Cobb wanted me to turn, I’d turn. I’d turn until my fingers bled—until I rubbed the flesh from my hands and withered away to a skeleton. A skeleton who could turn really, really well

"You have four guns."
"Someone must have stuck them on when I wasn't looking"

I wanted so badly to be too cool to like a Brandon Sanderson novel and I failed so hard.

This one was on audible. I have to say the narrator did an amazing job. This is my first Brandon Sanderson book and I anted to go in with something light since I heard some of his books for adults can be a little heavy. This did not disappoint!
