super weird little book about outcasts of society and how two people who don’t fit societal expectations take very different approaches to reconciling with that

her life is sad, but not in a ‘get a real job, find a partner, etc.’ (like in the book) but in a ‘wow her only source of happiness and fulfillment is a convenience store’

I wasn't sure what to expect when starting this book but I enjoyed it. It's a light read and it really provoked me to think. I found the concept of the story interesting at times and admired the main character's self awareness. I believe this is the first translated book that I've read, I'll be sure to check out some more.

Convenience Store Woman is a fantastic book by Sayaka Murata, and an excellent read and introduction to her work! I loved this book and the way she made Shiraha such a detestable character so well! I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to get into translated fiction! The book has such a wholesome and hopeful vibe that really emphasises Keiko's loneliness throughout.

Very no-plot-just-vibes. Keiko (and her story) make some interesting points about the role of employees under capitalism and societal norms and expectations for women, but the misogyny of one if the main characters made it annoying to read at some parts. But, it was short and fast-paced enough that I read it in one sitting, so I can’t complain.
