Very sad what happened to Dounia’s family at such a young age and what she and many others had to endure. It was a great GN that showed her experience as a young child during WWII, and an even better story as she was explaining her secret to her granddaughter. It was very touching and I’m glad to have read it.

I really think First Second's review sums it up, so I'll direct you to go over there. An excellent title for introducing the Holocaust.

What a powerful story. The illustrations (particularly of those in/recently out of the camps) are especially poignant and arresting.

It is definitely age-appropriate as this is a story of a child during the Holocaust and it is told from their perspective, with many missing pieces of information. Inspiring story of upstanders in France working together to save Jewish children. Will likely inspire more questions.

This is a great, heartfelt, heartwrenching story that unexplores difficult topics in a way children can understand.

It tackles the wrong doings of WWII with the pressures of the Nazi party in France to Jewish citizens and the lengths they went to stay safe.

It also tackles the crushing inevitably that not everyone returns home from such tragedies and no one leaves unscathed. BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially when you have family with you to support and love. You can teach them, just as they can teach you.

Great children's perspective of World War II. Loved the illustrations. Full review to come.
