I enjoyed this novel for a few reasons: its setting - Victorian England / France, religious vs pagan / evil forces dating back to times of crusades, spiritual and divine theme underlying the whole novel, the appearance of such characters as mysterious monks in equally mysterious and ancient monasteries, historical and linguistic background. It is dead creepy and disturbing so you may not want to read it at nightime :)

The beginning was a bit slow, however I enjoyed getting to know our main character, Mr. Asquith, just as much as I enjoyed the others. Although I hoped to see more of Matthew Atherton. The scenery was rather nice and the mood was okay-ish as well. The second half was slightly boring, I wanted to know more about the shadow, more creepy scenes. I hoped it would make me feel scared or frightened but none of that happened. Overall, 3 stars.
