Patti Smith's brain is a marvel. The blend of dreams, past, present, cowpokes, and polaroid pictures is supremely effective in revealing a life. It feels very lonely at times, and you can feel her sadness in every word, but it's never overwhelming. In fact, to me there was a sense of humor throughout the whole book that counteracted the "malaise" quite well.

I also found her use of craft really special. She weaves threads that are tied so neatly at the end so as to make it feel strange that this is a memoir. Loss seemed to be the biggest message to take away.

A fine book, but nowhere near as amazing as Just Kids

Patti, I love you so much. You're an astounding writer and this book is full of gold: coffee, ocean, poets, poetry, beloved coats, cameras, books and all kinds of love. Your style of reflection is glorious.

So many parts of this were amazing and so beautifully written but then there were also parts that fell flat for me. Makes sense since it’s a memoir and I definitely enjoyed the book regardless of the parts that didn’t fully have my attention.

This melancholy book feels like a cup of black coffee which is a recurring shameless indulgence of the author throughout this story. I love how the reader is hazily moved from dream to poem to real experience without never truly knowing which state they are in. It's non fiction but reads like fiction. Delicious and cozy

I didn't mean to read this book, but it was like a strange and poetic dream. I didn't dislike it, per se, but I would have enjoyed it more if I had intended to read it or if I had already been a fan of Patti's. 2.5 stars, or maybe 3.
