Jerry Pinkney tells young readers about his beginnings, from being young in segregated Philadelphia, struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia, and the wonderful help learning to draw helped his self esteem. His advocacy for himself and steady support of his parents is inspiring. One of my very favorite children’s book illustrators.

It’s impossible for me to read this book without thinking of what a truly nice person Jerry was, and so it was wonderful to read his remembrances of his childhood. I wish he could have seen it through to publication. 💔
