The shift in comic books in tone and audience and quality has been an immense one. 'The Great Darkness Saga' is one of the early great modern stories in superhero storytelling. The 'Darkness' arc itself is only six issues, but the issues collected in this deluxe edition are essential to getting the whole flavor of what the Legion of Super-Heroes was becoming.

Pretty good stuff right here. Superheroes and space opera are right up my alley. The only real downside is that this pretty long and not everything that happens in every issue feels relevant. There are a lot of characters and I sometimes mixed up who was in relationships with who.
But overall it's a good read with a lot of depth in terms of the characters. Good art too.

A really well done story, i don't know too much about the Legion of Super-Heroes, but it was easy to become invested in what was happening. I thought the handling and mystery around Darkseid and his servants was handled very very well.

My only complaint with this is the cover spoils the big reveal of who the villain is. The story slowly builds up to it with Levitz leaving clues in each issue until you finally see Darkseid in all his glory. Actual content wise, this is probably the best Legion story I've read, great pacing, great art, and a solid conclusion to the Legion taking on Darkseid.

This edition collects not only the Great Darkness Saga but the issues leading up to that storyline which catches the reader up on some of the storylines surrounding the Legion's usually large cast of characters. A very early 80's vibe with a story that draws in mystery (although less so with this collected edition that has the mystery villain on the cover) and comic lore from the 20th century heroes into an entertaining and epic Legion of Super-Heroes story with its combination of superheroes, sci-fi, and soap opera style drama. The art was a collaborative effort, as many book of the time, with a few storylines with more individual artists styles coming through. Collects LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #284-296 and ANNUAL #1.
